INTRODUCTION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With LAN HIJACK you can ....
Hijack work stations to provide instant support for network users.
You have full access to their screen and keyboard to step them
through any problem.
Hijack FAX boards, modems, printers, CD ROMS and tape backups
attached to other work stations.
Hold network computer conferences and training seminars.
Hijack another work station and run another program for real
multiprocessor multitasking!
Example Scenarios
-----------------
LAN HIJACK for Network Support
Jack's in his new spread sheet program and can't remember how to
generate a 3D bar graph. So he presses the LAN HIJACK HELP HOT
KEY. Jill, the company spread sheet guru, is writing up a letter
in her word processor when her computer sounds the LAN HIJACK help
alarm. She presses the LAN HIJACK HOT KEY and then the F2 key,
and instantly she is in jack's spreadsheet. With a few keystrokes
she whips out the graph, then HOT KEYS right back to her letter.
LAN HIJACK for Sharing Hardware.
Jill needs to FAX out her letter. But the FAX board is in the
computer downs stairs. So she presses the LAN HIJACK HOT KEY and
"hijack's" that station. Then runs up the FAX program and sends
the FAX. Then HOT KEYS right back to her word processor.
LAN HIJACK for Training Seminars
Jill needs to train her staff on their new accounts receivable
software. So she hosts a LAN HIJACK conference. From her station
she steps through the tricky parts of entering a receivable. And
all of her staff can watch her from their work stations.
LAN HIJACK for MultiProcessor MultiTasking
Jack has to print out several reports before he can leave for the
night. Instead of waiting for his station to print the reports
one at a time, he "hijacks" another station and starts it printing
one report. Then "hijacks" another station to print another
report. And on and on, using all available stations on the
network to work on his job. All at the same time! With LAN HIJACK
the full power of your network is available at your station.
Key Features
------------
Wide Area Networks
On your wide area network you can hijack a station next door or
across the country!
Conferencing
You may hold network conferences. Where many local work stations
can join a conference and watch your display.
Security Controls
Novell's security system determines which users may "hijack" a
station. And which stations a user may "hijack". All security is
assigned using Novell's SYSCON utility.
Easy to Use
Selection and control of another station is intuitive and simple
to learn.
Keyboard Lock Out
When you "hijack" a station you may lock it's keyboard, giving you
exclusive use of that station.
VGA and Hercules Graphics Support
Supports all VGA and Hercules Graphics modes. And you can
"hijack" stations with different display adapters.
Help Alarm
Users can call for assistance by pressing the HELP HOT KEY.
Memory Resident
Both sides of LAN HIJACK are memory resident, using just 5 kbytes
in the remote station.
Removable
The memory resident portions of LAN HIJACK can be removed from
memory without rebooting.
THE LAN HIJACK PROGRAMS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAN HIJACK uses two memory resident programs, LH.EXE and LHR.EXE.
When you run either program from the DOS commandline they are then
"loaded" and return the DOS prompt immediately. Once loaded, to
activate the program you must press a HOT KEY combination. You
select the HOT KEY combinations when LAN HIJACK is installed.
When LHR.EXE is loaded on a station, then the station can be
"hijacked" and controlled by another station. However, the
station can not "hijack" other stations.
When LH.EXE is loaded on a station, then the station can "hijack"
and control other stations. However, the station can not be
"hijacked" by another station.
When both LHR.EXE and LH.EXE are loaded on the same station, then
the station may "hijack" other stations and the station can be
"hijacked" by other stations.
REQUIREMENTS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Novell Netware network with PC/AT/PS2 work stations or close
compatibles.
INSTALLING LAN HIJACK
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The LAN HIJACK install program will configure LH.EXE and LHR.EXE
programs and place them in a selected destination directory. You
must use the install program. And you can only use the configured
LH.EXE and LHR.EXE programs placed in your destination directory
by install. Install will also create a user group, called
LAN_HIJACK on your network.
To install LAN HIJACK complete these steps:
1. Login to your network as SUPERVISOR.
2. Insert the LAN HIJACK diskette in any drive.
3. Complete the install program. For example, if the diskette
is in drive A, then from the DOS prompt type:
A:INSTALL
4. Remove the LAN HIJACK diskette and save it.
5. Run Novell's SYSCON to add LAN HIJACK users to the LAN_HIJACK
group. Only add users who will be permitted to "hijack"
other stations. For assistance in using SYSCON refer to your
Novell Netware manuals.
6. For each work station that will use LAN HIJACK you should add
the LAN HIJACK programs to the station's boot diskette ( or
diskless boot file ), as follows.
If the station will be used as a remote, copy the LHR.EXE
program from your destination directory to the boot diskette.
And add the command LHR to the boot disk's AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
just after the NET? command. Note, if the station uses
XMSNET? or EMSNET? use XMSLHR.EXE program in place of
LHR.EXE.
If the station will "hijack" remote stations, copy the LH.EXE
program from the destination directory, to the boot diskette.
And add the command LH to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, after the
NET? command. If the station is to have both LHR and LH
loaded, then LHR must be loaded first.
7. Reboot each work station to load the LAN HIJACK programs.
LAN HIJACK is now ready to use on your network.
USING LAN HIJACK
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAN HIJACK can be used on any station that has loaded LH.EXE. And
the user currently logged in at the station must be a member of
the LAN_HIJACK group.
To invoke LAN HIJACK press and hold the hot key combination you
selected during installation until your computer beeps twice. In
a moment the LAN HIJACK screen will be displayed.
Selecting A Remote Station
--------------------------
From the LAN HIJACK screen you may press either the up or down
arrow keys to select a remote station. If the selected station
has a user logged in, the user's login name will be displayed.
Or you may browse through your network with the left and right
arrow keys to select a remote station. Here however each remote
station's display will be shown on your screen.
Once you have selected a remote station you can "hijack it", that
is connect to it and take control, by pressing the ENTER key. You
can now use the station.
To return to the LAN HIJACK screen press the LAN HIJACK HOT KEY.
You may select another station or exit LAN HIJACK, by pressing the
ESC key, and return to your station.
The Function Keys
-----------------
While you are not connected to a remote station, you may use the
following function keys.
F1 Returns you to the LAN HIJACK screen while browsing.
F2 Select the station that requested help.
F3 Lock the selected station's keyboard.
F4 Unlock the selected station's keyboard.
F5 Turns keyboard intercept on.
F6 Host a Conference from your station.
F7 Join a Conference.
F8 Send a broadcast message to station.
F10 Exits LAN HIJACK.
Some of these functions are explained below.
Keyboard Intercept
Some programs take control of the computer's keyboard so that
remote key strokes will not be received. Invoking keyboard
intercept may remedy this problem. Intercept is turned off
automatically when returning to the LAN HIJACK screen. For
example, try Novell's NSNIPES game. Hijack a work station and run
NSNIPES. You will find that the station does not respond to your
key strokes. So, press the HOT KEY combination, to return to the
LAN HIJACK screen. Then press the F5 key and the ENTER key. You
can now play the game.
Conferencing
You may share your display with others on your network via
conferencing. To host a conference, press the F6 key from the LAN
HIJACK screen. You will then exit LAN HIJACK and your display
will be available to all stations that join the conference. Any
other station on the local network can join the conference by
pressing the F7 key from their LAN HIJACK screen. When joining a
conference there are no station restrictions. To end a conference
just press the LAN HIJACK HOT KEY combination. Note to host a
conference you must have both LH and LHR loaded. And conferencing
work stations must be on the same local network.
Program Removal
---------------
You may remove both LAN HIJACK resident programs with the -r
commandline option. For example, at the commandline type either:
LH -r
LHR -r
Display Compatibility
---------------------
When LAN HIJACK is used between two computers with different
display adapters, LAN HIJACK makes a best attempt to translate the
display. There are some combinations of display adapters and
modes that are not translatable. In these cases LAN HIJACK will
display the message "Display mode Not Supported." Here you still
have control of the station's keyboard but can not see the screen.
User Restrictions
-----------------
To use LAN HIJACK you must be a member of the group LAN_HIJACK. A
user who is NOT a member of the LAN_HIJACK group can NOT activate
LAN HIJACK and can NOT "hijack" any stations. To add or change
users to the LAN_HIJACK group use SYSCON ( refer to your Novell
manuals ).
For example, you may want to be the only person able to "hijack"
other stations. Here you would make yourself the only member of
the LAN_HIJACK group.
Station Restrictions
--------------------
LAN HIJACK adheres to Novell's stations restrictions for each
user. So that a user can only "hijack" a work station if the user
has login privileges to that station. To change station
restrictions use SYSCON ( refer to your Novell manuals ).
For example, you may have a modem in one work station that you
want everybody to be able to "hijack". But you do not want just
anyone to "hijack" your station, or the "boss's" station, etc.
Here you would add station restrictions for each user. Each user
must be given station restrictions to their own station and the
station with the modem.
LAN HIJACK and WINDOWS
----------------------
With WINDOWS in REAL mode you may freely "hijack" and be
"hijacked". But control of the remote mouse is not possible. You
may "hijack" a remote station running WINDOWS in STANDARD or 386
modes, but can not control the remote keyboard. And when running
WINDOWS on your station in STANDARD or 386 mode, you should NOT
enter LAN HIJACK via the HOT KEY, instead run LH as a DOS
application with the Non-resident commandline option. ie. LH -n
TROUBLE SHOOTING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This trouble shooting appendix explains some commonly encountered
problems and their solutions.
Error Message : Shell not installed.
Novell's IPX and NET? shells have not been installed at the
station. Run IPX.COM and NET?.COM first.

LHR.EXE must be loaded before LH.EXE. Remove LH by entering:
LH -r
Then enter the following commandlines :
LHR
LH
Error Message : Already Loaded
LH or LHR are already loaded and are ready to use. Or your
station is out of sockets. Try reconfiguring your shells ( Refer
to your Novell manuals. )

LHR has not been loaded at the station. Load LHR on the station
first.
The station is currently "hijacked" by another station. Wait
until it is available.
Do to Novell's station restrictions you do not have access to the
station. Use SYSCON to reassign your station restrictions.
Remote node removed from LAN HIJACK screen.
The remote station has been turned off or LHR has been removed.
Try turning on the station and reloading LHR.
Message : Display Mode Not Supported.
This message occurs if your station is not capable of displaying
the "hijacked" station's display. At this point you still have
control of the keyboard but are not able to see the remote's
display screen. You may wish to upgrade your display hardware to
match that of the remote station.
